1st item: Frederick Bauer (California, born Germany, 1857-?) oil on canvasboard coastal mountain landscape, presumably set in California, with sunny mountains and cattle in foreground, purple mountain range in background, and distant sea with two sailboats. Housed in an antique, carved giltwood frame with Pacific Art Pictures, San Francisco gallery sticker on reverse. Label affixed to reverse with biographical information from Edan Milton Hughes's 1986 publication ARISTS IN CALIFORNIA 1876-1940 concerning Bauer. Late 19th/early 20th century. Sight: 11" H x 17 1/2" W. Frame: 16" W x 22 1/2" H. 2nd item: Unsigned oil on canvas landscape with lake, autumnal trees, and distant mountain range. In the foreground an empty rowboat sits on the lake's shore. A setting or rising sun is obscured by clouds. Housed in an antique, carved giltwood frame with botanical ornamentation. Likely 20th century. Sight: 11 1/4" H x 19 1/4" W. Frame: 16 1/4" H x 24 1/4" W.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of James Lewis, Carthage, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Both paintings are in excellent condition. 1st item's frame has significant cracking and scattered gilt loss, especially on corners. 2nd item: Has been lined. Frame has scattered gilt loss and soiling, including soiling to right edge and upper right of frame.
