Circle or manner of Paul van Somer I (1576 – 1621, active/lived in England, Belgium) oil on canvas 3/4-length portrait painting depicting Lady Rosamund, wife of William Ffarington. Depicted wearing period Elizabethan English clothing including an elaborate ruff, a black farthingale dress with lace cuffs, pearl jewelry on each arm and in her upswept hair, and holding a red book. Latin inscriptions inscriptions on each side of her head reading "in the year of our Lord 1628" and "aged 55". 17th century, English. Housed in a Louis XIII-style gilt and painted wood frame. Placard on lower edge of frame reads "Rosamund wife of Wm FFarington, Died 1660, painted by Van Somer". Canvas: 41" H x 32" W. Frame: 45 3/4" H x 37 3/4" W.
CONDITION: Painting has been relined and restretched with new stretchers. Areas of blistering noted to canvas with evidence of over cleaning resulting in a halo effect in some areas. Scattered restoration. Please refer to UV photos.
