1st item: Braunschweig Stobwasser black papier mache snuff box with painted Neoclassical decoration to lid of the Three Graces, identified as being after Angelica Kaufmann (Swiss, 1741-1807) by an inscription on underside of lid; inscribed on base for Stobwasser Factory and numbered 6703. 5/8" H x 3 3/4" dia. 2nd item: Black lacquer snuff box with hand painted deer hunting scene with riders, dogs, and a buck in a dense forest to lid. Laid paper note lining the box, handwritten in Dutch and German, identifies the decoration as after Johan Elias Ridinger (German, 1698-1769), along with another inscription translating to "Snuff box / Owned by: Oberamtmann H. Jager, City of Zorbig / built the first Tobacco factory in Prussia under Fr. Wilhelm III. 1" H x 4 1/2" dia. Both German, late 18th or early 19th century.
PROVENANCE: Private West Tennessee Collection.
CONDITION: 1st item: Condition is very good with some miniscule scattered paint loss and craquelure, especially along upper right edge. Minor scuffs to the bottom and interior. 2nd item: Condition is good with a hairline crack running around perimeter and pigment loss due to flaking in upper left, along with craquelure throughout. Minor cracking and abrasions with pigment loss on bottom and sides of box.
