1st item: C. & L.C. Ives triple-decker Shelf Clock, Bristol, Connecticut. Late Classical style mahogany veneer case having a bonnet top with finials, a gilt painted wood clock face with Arabic numerals, above an eglomise painted portrait of a female, flanked by Corinthian columns, above a lower door with an eglomise painted landscape scene flanked by curved stiles, the whole resting on ball feet. Maker’s label inside lower section reading in part “Patent Brass Eight Day Clock, Made and Sold by C. & L. C. Ives, Bristol, Conn”. Clockworks with strap brass, eight-day time and strike movement powered by two cast iron weights and regulated by a pendulum. 40″ H x 17 3/8″ W x 5 1/2″ D. Circa 1830’s. 2nd item: Seth Thomas, Connecticut, Number #2 8 Day Parlor Calendar Shelf Clock. Comprised of a rosewood veneer Gothic style case having three panels, including an upper painted clock face with Arabic numerals, a central eglomise painted landscape panel, and a lower panel with calendar dial, day, and date windows. Fitted with an 8-day, brass weight driven movement. Seth Thomas paper label to inside of case and reverse central panel/door. 30 1/2″ H x 18 5/8″ W x 5 3/4″ D. Circa 1860’s.
PROVENANCE: The Collection of Michael and Peggy Mahoney, by descent from the historic homes of Clarkland Farm at Bryan’s Station and Cherrycote, Lexington, Kentucky.
CONDITION: 1st item: Overall good condition, case with general wear. Clock face with some grime, light wear, and minor scratching. Lower painted glass panel with losses to paint and hairlines. Not tested for functionality. 2nd item: Clock case in overall good condition with triangular patch to base of left column. All clock panels with wear and losses. One weight detached, but both are present. Not tested for functionality.
