Diminutive Jacobean carved oak blanket chest or coffer, pegged construction with wrought iron hardware having rosehead nails; rectangular top with iron strap hinges, over a case with double paneled fronts and sides, the front with band of guilloche molding flanked by two relief carved lion head masks, over chip carved sides terminating in compass rose carved circles above four short feet. Iron side handles. 23" H x 41" W x 19" D. English or Continental, early/mid 17th century. CONDITION: Original dark surface. Lacking interior strap hinges and lockplate, patch at front center of lid from lock removal, some minor damage above keyhole (lacking key). Some loss of height to feet, some loss to lion noses. Later bracing to back. Considerable shrinkage to bottom. Wear and general shrinkage cracks throughout.
