Large Continental School, 18th century large panoramic oil on canvas pastoral landscape, depicting Classical figures engaged in various activities (fishing, tending sheep, etc.) along a calm river mid-ground, with castles nestled into cliffs and mountains rising beyond. Unsigned. Housed in a later carved gilt wood frame. Sight: 32" H x 57" W. Framed: 37 1/2" H x 62 1/2" W.
CONDITION: Painting has been lined. Stretcher mark to left edge of canvas. Repaired tear with fill and retouching to center left, 5" x 8", plus possible repaired linear tear with fill and retouching to center right, 7", and scattered areas of flaking with retouching especially to center, 3" x 2". Area of flaking or minor exfoliation losses to foliage in upper left, 3 1/2" x 2". Some areas of blanching noted to the varnish layer. Overall grime and scattered areas of light crazing.
