Flemish School oil on canvas cabinet sized painting after the self portrait by Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish/Belgium/Germany, 1577-1640) originally executed in 1638, currently held in the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien. The painting portrays the artist attired in a heavy black coat and wide-brimmed hat, in three quarter profile, gazing at the viewer. Housed in a giltwood molded frame. Sight: 11 1/8" H x 7 7/8" W. Framed: 14 1/4" H x 11" W. 19th century or earlier.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Edward Laudermilk, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Craquelure throughout. Creasing from stretcher visible to right and lower portions. Alligatoring to paint layer with some fine corresponding losses to paint on the lower half of portrait; a couple of tiny flakes to lower center edge and lower right corner. Frame with scattered minor losses to gilt.
