A pair of Continental Grand Tour patinated bronze sculptures depicting Mercury and Fortune, after Jean Bologne (Italian, 1529-1608), each issuing from the open mouth of a cherub and mounted on a round, beige marble base. Circa 1900. Sculptures: 26" H. Bases: 2 1/2" H, 7" diameter.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Thelma Schlicher, by descent from the estate of U.S. Ambassador Ronald Schlicher, Brentwood, TN. Note: Tennessee native Ron Schlicher entered the foreign service in 1982, working primarily in the Middle East. He returned to TN after retiring in 2011. Among his many diplomatic roles, he served as Ambassador to Cyprus, U.S. Principal Deputy Assistant Coordinator of Counterterrorism, and was director of the Iraq Task Force during the 2003 war with Iraq.
CONDITION: Oxidation, scratches and several spots of wear to patina on both figures. Losses to fingers on both figures, and the object being held aloft by Fortune has been broken off and is no longer present. Mercury has become detached from its base and needs a new screw to secure it to the base. Wear and small chips to bases.
