Prosper Ferey (French, active 19th century) oval oil on panel pastoral landscape of a shepherd clad in a sheep skin, seated on a log before a body of water, as four sheep and a goat graze nearby. The scene is framed by trees with a forest and partly clouded blue sky. Signed in red lower right "Ferey" and illegibly dated, possibly 1859. Housed in a contemporary brown wood frame with gilt wood liner. Sight: 29 1/8" H x 23 1/8" W. Framed: 33 1/2" H x 27 3/4" W.
PROVENANCE: Private Middle Tennessee estate.
CONDITION: Scattered craquelure and light grime. Horizontal wood shrinkage to front of panel that corresponds to cradling on the back. Wear to edges of board with some abrasions to left side from frame, a few nail holes to top edge.
