Hardcover 12mos, 690 top edge gilt pages with fourteen plates. 3rd item: SKETCHES BY "BOZ," Second Series, First Edition, Second Issue, by Charles Dickens, illustrated by George Cruikshank, published by John Macrone, London, 1837. Hardcover 12mo, 377 top edge gilt pages with frontispiece, vignette, and eight plates, with the final catalogue of Macrone's publications dated December 1836. Note: Includes early issue points: Page vi is mis-numbered "viii"; the list of illustrations gives "Vauxhall Gardens by Day" twice by mistake and omits the final plate: "Mr. Minns and his Cousin." 4th-6th items: LIFE OF DICKENS, Vol. I-III, First Edition, by John Forster, published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1872-74. Hardcover octavos, 1,410 top edge gilt pages with index, three frontispieces with tissue paper guards, and additional illustrations in text, Vol. I and II with back advertisements. 7th-8th items: THE PLAYS AND POEMS OF CHARLES DICKENS, Vol. I & II, First Edition, numbered 40/150, edited, prefaced, and annotated by Richard Herne Sheperd, published by W. H. Allen, London, 1882. Hardcover octavos, 826 top edge gilt pages, including bibliography and index. All volumes rebound by Riviere and Son, London in red morocco leather with gilt stamped covers and spine, five raised hubs, gilt dentelle with dark green paper pastedowns and endpapers, ex libris plate to interior of front cover. Original cloth blindstamped covers and spines laid down to back matter pages. Ranging in size from 8 1/8" H x 5 1/4" W x 1 1/8" D to 11" H x 8" W x 2 1/4" D.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Edith (Edie) M. Bass, Nashville, Tennessee. Most of the items from her estate in this auction were by descent from her parents, Walter Paul McBride and Claire Childs of Lake Forest, Illinois.
CONDITION: Covers in overall very good condition with wear to hinges, corners slightly bumped. Pages in overall good, legible condition with toning/toning impressions, acid burn, scattered foxing spots, scuffs, creases, few pencil marks, light handling wear. Some pages unevenly cut. 1st-2nd items: Pages 397 and 398 are not present to Vol. I. Does not include frontispieces. 1 1/4" x 1/2" area of ink staining to last page and back matter page. 3rd item: "Mr. Minns and his Cousin" plate is facing p. 263.
