Two (2) Victorian Scottish Tartan Ware Boxes. 1st item: Unusual tartan pattern paper covered Playing Card case in the form of a book; top slides to reveal a deck of cards inside; the exterior with decoration of 3 cards and pattern label CALEDONIA. 4 1/2"H. 2nd item: Thread box of lobed form with divided interior and four thread holes. Pattern is not named on box but appears to be Caledonia or Stuart. 1 1/2"H. Both items mid to late 19th century.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of F. Hamilton Hazlehurst, longtime chair of the Vanderbilt University Art Department.
CONDITION: 1st item: Very good condition with very minor wear to exterior; some fine crazing to exterior card decoration; some minor handling wear/ grime and toning to deck of cards. 2nd item: Scuffing and some wear to exterior, losses to thread hole covers, broken hinge.
