Set of Eight (8) English George III Hepplewhite mahogany side chairs, oak secondary wood, hoop shaped backs with pierced fan splats, drop-in upholstered seats, square tapered legs connected by H stretchers, back legs with inside edge chamfered. All with impressed mark "HM" inside back seat rail, possibly a maker's mark. Each with carved Roman numeral below shoe. 36 3/4" H x 20 5/8" W x 20 1/4" D overall. 15 1/2" seat depth. Circa 1790. Provenance: Deaccessioned from the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. CONDITION: Overall very good condition. Older finish. Wear to back legs, feet and stretchers. 3 chairs missing 1 corner bracket; 1 chair missing 2 corner brackets. Some with replaced corner brackets. 1 chair with repaired split to lower splat and shoe. Upholstery worn or frayed.
