Circle of Giuseppe Castiglione (Italian/Chinese, 1688-1766), Qing Dynasty portrait of a civil official in a substantial parcel gilt 18th-century frame. The watercolor and gouache on paper painting depicts an elderly male civil official in a black coat with phoenix-embroidered rank badge, tiered cap, and white beaded necklace. He is seated on a chair with decorative carpet below. The paper image is mounted on a board and housed in a heavy, deeply carved parcel gilt European wooden frame with remnants of old light green paint. Frame likely Italian, 18th century. Sight: 49" L x 29 1/4" W. Framed: 66" L x 46 1/2" W. Note: Giuseppe Castiglione, also known as Lang Shining, was the best known of a number of European Jesuit painters who served in the court of the Kangxi Emperor and adapted their painting style to Chinese themes and tastes.
PROVENANCE: A Nashville, Tennessee estate.
CONDITION: The figural image has been cut out and mounted to a cream-painted artist's board. There are some losses and areas of scattered inpainting, primarily to the face and lower left, near chair leg. Some creasing to image paper from mounting. Frame exhibits wear and some losses, with some old pest holes, and some scattered shrinkage. Shadow line of former label en verso of frame.
