Case Antiques, Inc. Auctions & Appraisals is honored to present the estate of Mrs. Margaret Wemyss Connor. Margaret “Peggy” Connor grew up at historic Fairvue Plantation in Gallatin, the home of her father, Genesco Inc. co-founder William Wemyss, and stepmother, Ellen Wemyss, a preservationist credited with helping save Cragfont, Rosemont, Tulip Grove and other important Middle Tennessee houses. Margaret Connor and her late husband, Thomas, shared that same passion for the past. They were active supporters of historic preservation and the arts in Middle Tennessee (Thomas Connor served as president of the board at Cheekwood and chaired the building committee for Botanic Hall, and Margaret Connor was a violinist for the Nashville Symphony for several years). The Connors were avid collectors of American paintings and furniture, as well as Worcester and Chinese Export porcelain, silver, and early brass. Many of the items in this auction descended from the Wemyss family (which came to Middle Tennessee from Alabama shortly after the Civil War) or were collected with care and discernment by Mr. and Mrs. Connor for their Belle Meade home. We were honored to count Mrs. Connor among our past clients and are among the many who will miss her lively presence.
