Jan Frederik Pieter Portielje (Dutch, 1829-1908), large oil on panel painting, untitled interior scene of woman and girl in Edwardian dress. The woman is pulling a book from a cabinet and the seated child is holding a book in her lap. A doll is resting on a nearby chair. Condition: some blistering and flaking near the center of the painting, otherwise good condition. Signed "Portielje Antwerp" lower left. Sight: 29"H x 23-1/2" W. Framed: 37"H x 31" W. Framed in molded gilt frame. Late 19th century. Biography courtesy of AskArt: A Dutch portrait painter, especially of aristocratic persons, Jan Portielje studied in Amsterdam and later in Antwerp. After this period of training he spent two years in Paris and traveled in France and Germany. Settling in Brussels, he made a name for himself as a portrait painter, especially in English circles. Large East Tennessee redware pottery storage jar, lead glaze body with manganese stripe decoration, sine wave incising around upper shoulder, extruded or pulled smooth handles, attributed to Sullivan Co., Tennessee or Southwest Virginia. For a similar example of a large decorated jar, refer to the article, “Earthenware Potters Along the Great Road in Virginia and Tennessee”, J. Roderick Moore, Antiques Magazine, September 1983, p. 532, plate III. Condition: Overall very good condition with chips to one side of the rim, minor chips to base. 15″ Height. Mid 19th century. Note – recognition of the prolific Cain pottery in East Tennessee was noted in published resources as early as 1909, where Oliver Taylor in “Historic Sullivan” states, “Another factory which received national attention was the Cain pottery, located at Emanuel Church, and owned by two brothers, William M. and Abe Cain . . . Condition: minor discoloration, paper has been trimmed on one side to fit into frame. Sight: 8-1/4" W x 15" H, framed: 10-1/4" W x 17" H. Lot is accompanied by a copper toy horn (6-1/2"), by oral history the same horn depicted in the painting. Southern school portrait, oil on canvas, of William Hardie Timmons of Madison County, AL (1839-1906). Unsigned, but bears similarities to the work of Joseph Thoits Moore, who along with William Frye and Nicola Marschall was one of the predominant Alabama portrait painters of the day. Timmons, a member of a prominent early Alabama family, lived at Timmons Plantation outside Huntsville. He is depicted in this painting as a young man, seated in a chair, wearing a black suit and large blue bow tie. Molded giltwood and composition frame, probably original. Condition: overall craquelure, creasing and minor flaking. Scattered losses to frame. Sight: 27-3/4" W x 34-1/2" H (oval), framed: 40" W x 46" H. American, circa 1860. Henry White (1732-1786) was a prominent New York merchant and president of the NY Chamber of Commerce. He married Eva Van Cortlandt (see related lot, #324). Molded giltwood frame. Overall good condition with cracquelure throughout and some paint repair and loss. Framed: 30-1/2" W x 36" H, Sight: 23-3/4" W x 29-3/4" H. American, mid-19th century. This portrait is one of two known copies painted by Henry Peters Gray in the mid-19th century for descendants of Henry White and has been documented by The Frick Art Museum as having always belonged to descendants of the subject's family. Milton Bond (1918-2010, Connecticut), reverse painting on glass depicting an old fashioned winter landscape, signed lower left "Milton Bond, 1971". Excellent condition. Sight – 9 1/2" H x 13 5/8" W. Framed – 13 1/2" H x 17 1/4" W. Biography(Courtesy of Ask Art): Born in New York City, he was one of the few folk artists working in the exacting medium of reverse-glass painting. Most of his life was as a New England oysterman and sailor. For years, he was the master of one of the last commercial sailing ships operating out of Long Island. He traveled up and down the New England coast, which provided many visual memories. In the 1960s, he began recording these in small oil scenes on the back of clear glass, which protects the painting. He did the tiny frontal details first and the background last. He recorded bucolic rural scenes and busy urban vistas churning with activity.Mr. Bond’s work is in numerous major collections including those of the Grand Palais in Paris, the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C., the Museum of American Folk Art, New York City, the Henri Rousseau Museum, Paris, and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. Milton Bond (1918-2010, Connecticut), reverse painting on glass depicting a harbor scene, titled lower left "FAYERWEATHER LIGHT, BLACKROCK HARBOR" and signed lower left "Milton Bond". Excellent condition. Sight – 9 3/8" H x 13 1/4" W. Framed – 12 1/4" H x 16 1/4" W. Biography(Courtesy of Ask Art): Born in New York City, he was one of the few folk artists working in the exacting medium of reverse-glass painting. Most of his life was as a New England oysterman and sailor. For years, he was the master of one of the last commercial sailing ships operating out of Long Island. He traveled up and down the New England coast, which provided many visual memories. In the 1960s, he began recording these in small oil scenes on the back of clear glass, which protects the painting. He did the tiny frontal details first and the background last. He recorded bucolic rural scenes and busy urban vistas churning with activity. Mr. Bond’s work is in numerous major collections including those of the Grand Palais in Paris, the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C., the Museum of American Folk Art, New York City, the Henri Rousseau Museum, Paris, and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. One coin silver teaspoon, downturned tip back fiddle handle, marks for Samuel Bell (1797-1881). Condition: marks worn, some small areas of denting and pitting. 4-3/4" L, 0.3 troy oz. Silversmith Samuel Bell was active in Knoxville from 1819-1852 and the mark on this spoon is similar to the mark illustrated in Benjamin Caldwell's "Tennessee Silversmiths", p. 33-34. Samuel Bell also served two terms as Knoxville's mayor from 1840-42 and 1844-46. In 1852, Bell moved to San Antonio, Texas and continued his vocation as a silversmith. [See more photos →]
