Attributed to Nam Cheong (Chinese, active 1840-1870), pair of oval Chinese Export harbor scenes with ships and figures, including one depicting the nine story pagoda at Whampoa Reach. Unsigned. Unframed. Canvas: 20 1/2" H x 15 1/2" W. Note: Namcheong, also spelled Nam Cheong, was a painter who likely had a studio in Whampoa. He was frequently commissioned to create ship and port scenes by Western clients. Many of his canvases share the same oval format and compositional interplay of light on water; the 9-tiered pagoda at Whampoa Reach was frequently illustrated in his paintings. (Ref. Carl L. Depicts multiple figures in a landscape setting engaging in various activities including two figures in a boat, two males carrying sticks and a hoe, two young boys with a cow or bull, and two men counting or playing a board game visible through an opening in an architectural space, with a mountain and forest landscape in the background. Manner of Gerrit Dou (Dutch, 1616-1675 ) oil of canvas painting depicting a young man wearing a vibrant red cap while practicing the flute. A sunset or sunrise is visible through the portal behind him while a tangle of vegetation occupies the space in the composition's upper left. Housed in a new, custom molded giltwood frame. Sight: 15" H x 10" W. Framed: 19 1/4" H x 15" W. 18th C. or earlier. Note: Dou was among Rembrandt's most successful students and one of the best known of the 17th-century Dutch fijnschilders, or fine-painters, famed for their nearly microscopic attention to detail. Dou is especially celebrated for his window-niche scenes, like this painting.

Pierre Duval le Camus (French, 1790-1854) oil on panel cabinet painting depicting a young woman standing in an ornate white dress with train festooned with pink flowers, reaching to pluck a grape from a vine climbing up a column. Housed in an ornate giltwood frame, possibly original, with fruit and berry molded inner edge, set off from an egg and dart molded outer frame by a raised velvet mat with shield shaped corner moldings. Artist's nameplate lower center. Sight: 12" H x 5" W. Framed: 20" H x 13" W. Biography: Pierre Duval Le Camus was born in Lisieux, France to a master glazier who sent him to Paris to study business. Le Camus sought out artistic training instead, studying under Pierre-Claude Gautherot and eventually under Jacques Louis David. After being sought out for the portrait of a prominent judge in 1811, Le Camus began a career of lucrative commissions for Parisian high society. He split his time between genre works and these portraits of prominent individuals. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1819 to 1853, founded the Museum of Art and History of Lisieux in 1837, became a Knight of the Legion of Honor, and served as mayor of the town of Saint-Cloud from 1853 to 1854, where he died. Olive P. Black (American, 1868-1948) oil on canvas landscape painting depicting a stream meandering through a line of trees, with gently rising hills beyond. The late autumn gold and bronze foliage of the trees is reflected in the water below. Signed "Olive P. Black" lower left. Newer Newcomb Macklin-style giltwood frame with incised stylized foliate decoration to corners. Placcard with artist name and life dates affixed lower center of frame. Sight: 23" H x 29" W. Frame: 34" H x 40" W. Biography: Olive Black was born in Massachusetts but later studied art in New York, at both the Art Students League and the New York National Academy of Design. Her teachers included Hugh Bolton Jones and William Merritt Chase, and her style is said to incorporate aspects of the Barbizon School and Impressionist styles she learned from each, respectively. Black exhibited at many prominent institutions, including the National Academy of Design, the Carnegie Institute, the Boston Art Club, and the Art Club of Philadelphia.

George Douglas Brewerton (California/Rhode Island, 1827-1901) large pastel on paper maritime landscape painting titled "Newport Rocks," depicting a Rhode Island coastline with rocky terrain and waves crashing against the shore under a cloudy blue sky. Ships are visible in the distance. Signed "Brewerton, 1874" lower right. Titled en verso of frame. Housed under glass in a gilt and ebonized wood frame with incised foliate decoration to each corner, acanthus leaf interior, a linen mat, and giltwood filet. Sight: 18 1/4" H x 27 3/4" W. Framed: 31" H x 40 1/2" W. Note: Newport, Rhode Island-born George Brewerton was best known for his paintings of American landscapes in oil and pastel. As a young man he prepared for a military career and studied with Robert Weir, the drawing master at West Point. When war with Mexico loomed in 1846 he went to California and eventually met Kit Carson, with whom he traveled and drew many Western landscapes. Brewerton resigned from the army in 1852 and became a journalist, illustrator, and attorney. His works, exhibited in many settings including the National Academy of Design, are records of his wide ranging travels from California to the Tropics and along the New England coast and even to Ireland. William Tylee Ranney (American, 1813-1857), oil on canvas portrait depicting the artist's sister Clarissa Ranney Baldwin (1809-1886) or mother, Clarissa Gaylord Ranney (1789-1863). The bust length portrait depicts the subject with brunette curls, wearing a white lace bonnet and collar and a black dress. Unsigned. Stained wood frame with gilt sight edge. Canvas 25 1/4"H x 20"W. Frame 32"H x 27" W. Biography: William Tylee Ranney, is best remembered for his paintings depicting the American West and the opening of the American frontier, as well as sporting art and portraiture. Born in Connecticut, he was apprenticed to a tinsmith in Fayetteville, North Carolina after his sea-captain father was lost at sea. He joined the Texas army in 1836 to fight for independence against Mexico, but in 1838 returned to the Northeast, where he exhibited for the first time at the National Academy of Design. He traveled back and forth between North Carolina and New York for a time and advertised himself as a portrait painter in 1843. [The portrait being offered in this auction may date from about this time]. By 1853 Ranney had built a studio in Hoboken, NJ and was producing paintings depicting the opening of the American frontier. His successful career was cut short in 1857 when he died of consumption. Gilbert Gaul (New York/Tennessee/New Jersey, 1855-1919) oil on canvas painting depicting two female figures standing on a riverbank with rocky terrain, one holding a branch and the other holding a jug over her head and a mug in her hand, with verdant foliage in the background. Signed "Gilbert Gaul. Jamaica." lower left. Housed in a carved giltwood frame. Sight: 19 1/2" H x 12 3/4" W. Framed: 25 1/4" H x 18 1/2" W. Biography: New Jersey-born artist Gilbert Gaul studied art with Lemuel E. Wilmarth at the school of the National Academy of Design from 1872 to 1876, and privately with the noted genre painter, J. G. Brown. He continued his training at the Art Students League during 1875 and 1876. Gaul first exhibited his work at the National Academy in 1877. In 1881, he inherited a farm in Van Buren County, Tennessee, from his mother's family, and lived there four years to fulfill terms of the bequest. In 1885, he returned to New York though he also continued to spend time at the farm in Tennessee. Gaul gained acclaim for his illustration art and portrayals of Civil War scenes. He became a regular exhibitor at the National Academy annuals between 1877 and 1902; in 1882, he was accorded the status of full academician-the youngest artist to attain the honor. He exhibited at the 1889 Paris Exposition; the 1893 World Columbian Exposition in Chicago; and the 1902 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, where he was awarded medals. In 1876 Gaul made his first trip to the American West, an area for which he developed a particular affinity. He made numerous western trips in subsequent years, photographing and rendering scenes of Native Americans and the frontier, which he would later work up into paintings in his studios in New York or Tennessee. In 1890, he worked for the United States census on reservations in North Dakota. He also visited Mexico, the West Indies, Panama, and Nicaragua. An account of his travels was published in Century Magazine in 1892. In 1904, he returned to Tennessee and settled in Nashville. The decreasing interest in Civil War subjects resulted in financial hardship for Gaul. He gave private art lessons, and taught at the Watkins Institute, Nashville, and at Cumberland Female College, in McMinnville. He also spent time in Charleston, South Carolina. By 1910, he had moved to Ridgefield, New Jersey, where he continued to paint and live out his remaining years. (Source: The Johnson Collection)

William Edmondson (American/Tennessee, 1874-1951) carved limestone sculpture or garden ornament in the form of a large dipper or cup of rectangular form, angled at the lower edges, with a trapezoidal handle, open in the center. The side opposite the handle features a shallow, molded, angular lip that echoes the lines of the body and handle. 20"W x 12"D x 7" H. Exhibited, "William Edmondson: A Retrospective," The Tennessee State Museum, 1981. The dipper is accompanied by a minimally hewn flat rectangular limestone base, measuring 4" H x 14 1/2" W x 13" D, acquired by the consignors' parents along with the sculpture directly from William Edmondson's yard in 1951. Biography: William Edmondson was born in Davidson County, Tennessee, the son of freed slaves, and worked most of his life as a railroad employee and janitor. A spiritual experience at the age of 57 prompted him to begin sculpting limestone using a railroad spike as a chisel, and he claimed divine inspiration for the works produced during his 17-year art career. In 1937, Edmondson became the first African American artist to have a solo show at the Museum of Modern Art, and he is regarded as one of the most important self-taught artists of the 20th century. Provenance Note: Dr. Virgil and Louise Lequire were influential members of Nashville's arts community. Louise Lequire (1924-2006), a talented painter in her own right, was a founding member of the Nashville Artist Guild and taught art at Montgomery Bell Academy and the Nashville Institute for the Arts. She was the first art critic for the Nashville Banner newspaper and a regular art columnist from 1960-1961, and Arts Editor for Nashville Life Magazine from 1993-1996. Her article on William Edmondson appeared in Smithsonian Magazine in 1981 and she was a contributor to the catalog for the Edmondson exhibit at the Tennessee State Museum that same year. CONDITION: The limestone is very granular and has scattered rust colored spots that are not stains but natural colorations, as well as some minor dark staining residue to the interior. There are some natural holes in the bottom of the cup that do not penetrate, The base has old, likely original worn away areas or losses at 3 of the 4 corners, up to 2" x 2 1/2", moss-staining and scuffing/scratching to the top. Geoffrey Lamont Holder (1930 – 2014, active/lived in New York, Spain) impressionist oil on canvas profile portrait painting depicting a black female, seated with her arms crossed, wearing a white dress and red head wrap, against a mottled gold backdrop. Signed and dated lower left "G. Holder '57". Remnants of illegible label en verso top center stretcher. Unframed. 29" H x 9" W. Artist's Biography: Geoffrey Lamont Holder was a multi-talented Trinidadian-American dancer, choreographer, actor, composer, designer, and painter, who was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, in 1930. Holder relocated to New York City in 1953. and he received a Guggenheim fellowship in painting in 1957. He is known for still life and figure painting, photography, sculpture, and set and costume design. In addition to painting, Holder performed with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet as a principal dancer and performed on Broadway. He was the choreographer, costume designer, and director of the Broadway show "The Wiz" for which he won two Tony Awards. Additionally, he acted in several movies and television shows and was an advertising spokesman for 7 UP and other products.

CONDITION: Overall light craquelure, very light wear to margins, mostly to lower corners. In-painting to right side of face and upper right torso with a few minor areas of in-painting to dress, visible under blacklight inspection. [See more photos →]

Merton D. Simpson (1928-2013, active/lived in New York, South Carolina, Africa) oil on canvas Expressionist painting depicting a boat in a tumultuous sea. Signed lower right in block letters "M. D. Simpson". Housed in a narrow ebonized and gilt wood frame with wide linen border and gilt wood fillet. Sight: 15 1/2" x 19 1/4" Framed: 22" H x 25 3/4" W. Artist Biography: A native of Charleston, South Carolina, Simpson suffered from diphtheria as a child and during this time began to draw. He received private art lessons from the Charleston artist, William Halsey. In 1949, the Home Book Shop in Charleston hosted a solo exhibition of his work, and Atlanta University included him in their Eighth Annual Exhibition of Painting, Sculpture, and prints by Negro Artists. That same year, Simpson moved to New York, where he attended Cooper Union, studying under Robert Gwathney at New York University. In 1952, his watercolor "Nocturnal City" was exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and received an Honorable Mention. After serving in the US Air Force from 1951-1954, where he served as an artist and member of a Jazz Ensemble, he opened a Madison Avenue gallery featuring African art and modern art. Simpson also had works featured in the exhibitions Younger American Painters at the Guggenheim Museum in 1954 and Eight New York Painters at the University of Michigan in 1956. In 1959, he visited Europe for the first time and collaborated with many expatriate African-American writers, artists and musicians living in Paris including the writer, James Baldwin; artists, Larry Potter, Beauford Delaney and Herbert Gentry; and musicians, Count Basie, Thad Jones and the Mel Lewis Orchestra. In 1963 Simpson joined a group of African-American artists who formed the Spiral Club, whose goal was to contribute to the Civil Rights Movement. Throughout the 1970s, Simpson traveled extensively in West Africa and in the 1980's he created two series of works that reflect his great love of jazz and music. In the 1990s he began to incorporate both music and African art in his work. Throughout his career, Simpson had numerous solo and group exhibitions and his works are featured in numerous permanent and private collections. CONDITION: Craquelure, back of canvas with spots of dampstaining. Scattered areas of retouching, visible under UV light inspection, to stabilize large areas of paint where craquelure is thick and paint was becoming unstable. Charles Kermit "Buck" Ewing (Tennessee, 1910-1976) large mixed media on canvas painting titled "San Sebastian Wall". Depicts an abstract collage image featuring textured three-dimensional motifs, newspaper clippings, and shades of blue, grey, and white paint. Signed and dated "Ewing 64" lower left. Titled, signed, and dated " C. Kermit Ewing, Knoxville Tenn, Oct. 1964" upside down, en verso of canvas. Housed in a stained wormy wood frame with a linen liner and gilt filet. Walter Hollis Stevens (Tennessee, 1927-1980), "Knoxville II," watercolor on paper depicting an abstracted view of the city's skyline under a night sky. Signed "Stevens 61" lower right. Titled and additionally signed en verso. Housed in a chrome frame under glass, double matted. Sight: 16 1/2" x 21 1/2" W. Framed: 23 1/2" H x 28 1/2" W. Walter Hollis Stevens was a member of the "Knoxville Seven" group of progressive artists and joined the University of Tennessee faculty in 1957. Much of his art was inspired by Tennessee and Maine scenery. He was instrumental in organizing the Knoxville Watercolor Society and the Deer Isle (Maine) Art Association. His work won 55 awards in the East and Midwest, and is in the collection of at least 18 museums. (Source: the University of Tennessee Library).

Very large George Ayers Cress (Alabama/Tennessee, 1921-2008) oil on canvas landscape painting titled "Shadowed Landscape" rendered in shades of blue, green, yellow, orange, grey, and red. Signed and dated "George Cress 1963" lower right. Exhibited, The Hunter Museum of Art, Chattanooga, "George Cress: 50 Years of Painting," March 25-April 22, 1990. Exhibition label en verso. Biography: "George Cress was born in Anniston, Alabama and studied at Emory University, American University, and the University of Georgia, where he studied under fellow Southern contemporary artist Lamar Dodd. He was a central figure in Chattanooga's arts community and served as President of the Tennessee Arts Council. He sat on the board of the Hunter Museum of Art. From 1951-1984 he was painter in residence at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga. The Cress Gallery of Art at UTC is named in his honor." Large Carroll Cloar (American/Tennessee, 1913-1993) drawing, "The Mower We Found," pencil, colored pencil, and crayon on paper. The drawing, likely a study for a painting, features bust-length pencil depictions of a young white boy, likely Cloar himself, and a young black playmate, surrounded by elements of a tractor (seat, wheel), amid circles and other images, rendered in crayon and colored pencil. Cornelius Hankins (Mississippi/Tennessee/Virginia, 1863-1946) oil on canvas still life painting depicting an assortment of fruits, including melons, peaches, plums, berries, and grapes, along with the handle of an overflowing basket, upon which perches a bird. The bird tends to a nest containing three eggs that has been constructed amidst the fruit. In the upper right a second bird joins its companion as it alights on the branch of a small tree that emerges from the shadowy background, contrasting with the vibrant colors of the fruits. Signed and dated "Cornelius Hankins 1896," lower right. Housed in a ribbed giltwood frame with foliate corners. Affixed to the backing of the frame are a biographical label with text from "Who Was Who in American Art;" a sticker from Painting Conservation, Asheville, NC; and a H & K Gallery, Spartanburg, SC business card. Canvas: 30 1/4" H x 25" W. Frame: 40" H x 35" W. Biography: Mississippi-born Cornelius Hankins studied art in Nashville in 1883 under Professor Edwin M. Gardner and with Robert Henri, leader of the Ashcan School in St. Louis, and noted American Impressionist William Merritt Chase in New York. He taught in Richmond, Virginia for about 5 years before returning to Nashville to teach at the Nashville School of Art. He painted a number of landscapes and still lifes–typically less lavish than the present example–but made most of his income from portraits. Despite this, his still lifes perhaps best demonstrate his abilities as a painter. Works such as this painting show the influence of the 18th-century still life painter Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin, who created similarly tenebristic and moody images. Hankins also painted a number of prominent Southern subjects including Civil War officers and several governors.

Large Edward Hurst (American/Tennessee, 1912-1972) oil on canvas group portrait painting depicting three young members of the Howard family of Knoxville, TN. The two older boys play catch with a baseball while the youngest is seated on the ground with a toy train and cars. The spot where the boys are playing overlooks the Tennessee River and Lyon's Bend in the distance, beneath a cloudy sky. Signed and dated "Edward Hurst '59" lower right corner. Housed and matted in a molded giltwood frame. Sight: 29 5/8" H x 35 2/8" W. Framed: 39 1/8" H x 45 1/8" W. Biography: Edward Hurst was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1912. He studied under Catherine Wiley and at the Art Students League in New York, where he also studied with George Luks. He also studied in Europe at the Academies in Florence, Italy, and Munich, Germany. Primarily known for his still-life paintings and commissioned society portraits, Hurst spent much of his life in New York and London, while also maintaining a studio in Knoxville. During World War II, he taught camouflage to soldiers in the United States Army. In 1959, he was diagnosed with an allergy to oil paint, prompting him to work instead with watercolor, conte, and colored pencil on paper. Hurst was a member of the American Artists Professional Club, the Southern States Art League, and the National Arts Club. An example of Hurst's work is illustrated in "The Art & Furniture of East Tennessee" by Namuni Hale Young, p. 105, figure 58. Bernice Sims (Alabama/Louisiana, 1926-2014) very large acrylic on canvas outsider art painting depicting a nightime tent revival scene with African American figures circled around a central figure at a pulpit all gathered under a striped red tent under a starry sky. Signed "B. Sims" lower right. Unframed. 58 1/2" H x 72 1/2" W. Biography: Bernice Sims was born in rural Alabama in 1926 and resided there her entire life. It was not until she decided to enroll in community college, after raising six children, that she was encouraged by a professor to explore her artistic talent and turned to painting. Her works are characterized by bright colors, renderings of childhood memories, and, as she grew older, focused on the social and racial injustice amidst the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's. In 2005, her work depicting the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, AL, was issued on a postage stamp to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act.

Eddy Mumma (Florida/Ohio, 1908-1986) double-sided Folk Art/Outsider Art painting on cardstock. One side depicts a half-length figure with pink skin and red hood or hair, rendered in gestural brush strokes over exposed beige support. Identified as "Lori Justice" on sticker attached plastic sleeve: "Lori Justice / $400." En verso is an abstracted landscape scene that appears to depicts a building before a river on a snowy day, with red and brown vegetation throughout. Unsigned and unframed, includes general informational print-out. After 1969. 14 1/2" H x 11 3/4" W. Note: "Eddy Mumma took up painting at age 60, working alone in a small house in Gainesville, FL, where he lived to be near his only daughter, Carroll, and her family after the death of his wife. At Carroll's suggestion he enrolled in a painting class, but was so offended at the teacher’s criticism of his 'sloppy' art that he promptly quit the lessons. From that point forward, 'Mr. Eddy'–as he liked to be known–immersed himself in his working on his own, often covering both sides of any surface he could acquire and amassing the art on the increasingly full walls of his home. Restricted to a wheelchair in his tiny clapboard house, Mr. Eddy did not often go further than his front porch. His work became his world, filled from floor to ceiling with the colorful portraits he produced. Eddy did not sell his work, refused opportunities to exhibit and turned away interested gallery owners. He gave away or traded for art supplies only a few paintings during his lifetime. He said, 'my paintings belong with me.' Upon his death at age 78, Mr. Eddy left about 1,000 paintings as well as painted doors, lamps, and surfaces within the tiny home where he spent his last years." Anderson (California/Illinois, 1893-1960) folk art carved wooden figures together in a sculptural group, "Shotgun Wedding", including one (1) bride in a blue dress holding a bouquet, one (1) groom in an oversized crosshatch-patterned suit, one (1) pensive white-haired woman in a polka-dotted dress, one (1) somber white-haired man with a skinned knee holding a shotgun, and one (1) balding preacher in a black cape reading from the bible. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, under Puvius de Chavannes and Roll, and the Academie Julian. He was the leader of a school of painters known as the Bande noire or Nubians – due to the somber palette chosen which contrasted other post-impressionist paintings – and was associated with the Les Nabis student group. Though he travelled to and painted in Egypt, Italy, and Lake Geneva and exhibited at the Salon of 1889, Cottet gained acclaim for his moody scenes of harbor life on the Brittany coast. His paintings are housed in the collections of the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, the Hermitage, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, and many other museums in France.

Oil on canvas equestrian portrait depicting a dapple-grey hunter in a hilly landscape set against a cloudy sunset or sunrise sky. Signed lower left, "John Ferneley," (British, 1782-1860). Handwriting on the rear of the frame suggests a possible identity of the horse: "The Hermit by Greyskin, Mount of Charles Davis (died 1867), Huntsman to the Royal Buckhounds." Housed in a period giltwood frame. Sight: 29 1/2" W x 24 1/2" H. Frame: 34 1/4" W by 29 1/8" H. Early/Mid-19th century. Note: Hermit was the mount of the legendary British equestrian Charles Davis, Huntsman to Her Majesty Queen Victoria and First Whip of The Royal Buckhounds from 1821 until 1866. Charles Davis is featured in the 1897 book "The Queen's Hounds and Stag-hunting Recollections" by Baron Thomas Lister Ribblesdale and Edward Burrows. The book features illustrations of Charles Davis astride Hermit. Hermit is mentioned in the text as Davis's favorite mount. Davis is depicted riding Hermit in several paintings by other artists. Biographical note: John Ferneley, Sr. was born on 18 May 1782 at Thrussington, Leicestershire. By the time of his death in Melton Mowbray in 1860, he was regarded as one of the great British animal painters, specializing in horses, prize sheep, and cattle. He opened his studio in Melton Mowbray which was fast becoming a center for fashionable country sports particularly fox hunting. Painting in Melton during the hunting season, he also toured around the great estates of England and Ireland, painting landowners' horses, cattle, sheep, and hounds. His work became much sought after and his patrons included members of British and European Royal families and personalities such as Beau Brummel and the Count d'Orsay. He depicted Charles Davis on another mount in at least one painting (source: Leicestershire Country Council Museum Collections).

Grigory Stepanyants (Russian/American, 1927-2007) oil on canvas landscape painting titled "October, Lebanon, PA.," depicting a body of water before a line of trees with autumn foliage, against an early morning sky. Biography: Grigory Stepanyants was born in the former Soviet Union, and was trained at the Odessa Art Institute and the Surikov Moscow State Institute of the Arts. Graduating in 1970 as one of the top five students in the Soviet Union, Stepanyants was awarded the rank of "Excellence as an Artist-Painter." He emigrated to the United States in 1976 and established a career as a professional portrait painter and landscape artist living in NYC, Hilton Head, SC, PA, Iowa and TN.

Charles Frederick Naegele (Tennessee/Georgia/New York, 1857-1944) oil on canvas Romantic sunset landscape painting with a woman holding a child seated at the foot of a tree. A second tree extends from the left edge of the canvas and together they cast dark shadows over the foreground. The composition is dominated by the luminous yellow sky juxtaposed against the contre-jour foreground. Naegele employs a heavy impasto technique throughout the painting, especially noticeable in the sky. Housed in an antique, carved wood frame with a garland motif. Canvas: 41" H x 36" W. Frame: 49 5/8" H x 45" W. Biography: Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, Charles F. Naegele, who was of German descent, spent his early years in Memphis where his family moved in 1860. He is said to have begun copying drawings at an early age encouraged by Henry Scherer, a sculptor. By the time he was twelve, Naegele was apprenticed to a marble-cutting firm. After his father died in 1878, he worked for several years as a carriage painter and then as a sign painter. Naegele moved to New York in 1880 and worked in the studio of the landscape painter A.L. Rawson while studying under William Sartain and the American Impressionist William Merrit Chase. Although he executed the occasional landscape, including the present example, Naegele was known principally as a portraitist, and he was also recognized for portrait reliefs that he designed or medals. He worked with the New York City Parks Commission from 1888 to 1892. In 1894 he visited Europe, studying the great portraits of Holland, Belgium, and France. By 1929 Naegele retired to his hilltop studio, Artcrest, near Marietta, Georgia (Source: Paintings and Sculpture in the Collection of the National Academy of Design, Volume 1, 1826-1925, ed. David Bernard Dearinger).

Group of six (6) Carew Rice (South Carolina, 1899-1971) silhouettes on card stock, all signed, with varying dates and titles. Includes two (2) male profile silhouettes of the same sitter dated 1969, one (1) female profile silhouette dated "1955," housed in a paper portfolio, one (1) image of a cat titled "Meyow!" dated "1967," one (1) image of young lovers titled "Aint Love Grand", and one (1) landscape image with two deer in a forest with mossy trees., housed in a contemporary gilt frame. Ranging in size from 5 3/4" H x 4 1/4" W to 8 1/4" H x 5" W. Biography: Carew Rice is known as one of America's leading silhouette artists. His artistic training began at the University of Chattanooga where he is said to have taken an art course as an elective. Prompted by a professor's comment that most people identify their friends by profiles, Rice began cutting silhouettes of his friends. Rice is most commonly associated with South Carolina, where he born, and where he later became a folk-singer and story-teller in addition to creating intricate silhouette portraits and landscapes of Lowcountry landscapes. His figurative silhouettes were eagerly sought by Charleston society and collectors throughout the world during his lifetime. He died at his home, Brick House Plantation, in South Carolina in 1971.

PROVENANCE: The Estate of Tinka Brown, Nashville, Tennessee. Mrs. Brown was a descendant of Abram Maury, founder of Franklin, Tennessee. The portrait descended in her family, but the subject's identity is unknown.

CONDITION: Discoloration to back of frame. Lower part of glass over the monogram (back side of frame) is pressed inward and does not seal tightly. Dark shadowing across one eye and neck may be due to moisture damage. 3 noticeable tiny flakes to background: 2 at lower right edge, 1 about 1/4" from subject's jaw (left side of portrait). Painting of Judge John Hillhouse of Tennessee (1771-1840), attributed to John Neagle (Pennsylvania / NY, 1796-1865), oil on canvas. Subject is depicted with dark hair and dark eyes and attired in a striped waistcoat, black coat, and white cravat. Unsigned. Faint pencil inscription en verso of stretcher reads "John Hillhouse 18", possibly dating the portrait to 1818. Housed in a period American giltwood and gesso frame. Sight: 29 1/2" H x 23 1/2" W. Framed" 38 3/4" H x 32 1/2" W. Note: John Hillhouse was born in South Carolina. According to family genealogical records, he served with David Crockett and married Bethia Sharp of Kentucky. He served as a Justice of the Peace in Lawrence County, TN from 1818-1822 (source: Goodspeed's History of Lawrence County, 1886) and is credited with helping erect the first Lawrence County Courthouse. John Neagle was a Boston born artist who trained under Thomas Sully in Pennsylvania. In 1818, he traveled through Kentucky to New Orleans, receiving portrait commissions, before setting up a studio in Philadelphia (source: the National Gallery of Art).

George Dury (Tennessee, 1817-1894) oil on canvas laid down on board full-length portrait painting of a young girl attired in a white dress with blue shoes and a matching blue ribbon in her hair. She is depicted leaning against a red chair with red drapery hung from above and children's toys in the bottom left corner. The sitter is identified as young Anne Dallas Dudley (Tennessee, 1876-1955) who became a prominent women's activist, founding the Nashville Equal Suffrage League, serving as the President of the Tennessee Equal Suffrage Association, and Third Vice President of the National American Woman Suffrage Association noted for her successful effort in getting the Nineteenth Amendment ratified in the state of Tennessee, the final state needed to ratify the amendment nationwide. The painting is unsigned. A biography of the sitter, artist attribution and additional information about the work is affixed en verso. Housed in a period American giltwood fame with double wood filets. Sight: 49" H x 37" W. Framed: 59 1/2" H x 47" W. Circa 1880.

CONDITION: The painting has been lined and laid down on board, having a large tear through the center, and additional tearing and losses to the lower edge and scattered in the background, all of which have been restored with associated retouching, visible under UV light inspection. Note: Rose captured this view of umbrellas along a beach in Italy from a helicopter, 300 feet directly overhead. Rose is a self taught artist whose aerial landscapes are intended to give viewers a new perspective on ordinary scenes from locations across the globe. He worked as the official photographer of the Kitesurfing World Cup for several consecutive years starting in 2002.

George Konig (United Kingdom, 20th Century) exhibited original photograph titled "No.3 Tea Party at Dr. Barnardo's Home" depicting three children seated at table enjoying tea and biscuits. Mounted to a backing signed "George Konig" in pencil, lower right and titled lower left. Together with a label reading "Photograph By George Konig, A.R.P.S"… titled and copyrighted… "The Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain / Accepted and hung at the Annual Exhibition London 1945". Photograph and label both housed in ebonized wood frames with silvered filets under glass. Photograph – Sheet: 15" H x 11 3/4" W. Framed: 23" H x 18 1/2" W. Label- Sight: 15" H x 9 1/2" W. Framed: 18 1/2" H x 13" W. Note: Irish-born Dr. Thomas Barnardo (1845-1905) was a British champion for the care of children. When a cholera epidemic swept through London's East End, leaving 3000 people dead and many orphaned children, the young Barnardo felt an urgent need to help. He abandoned his medical training and devoted himself to helping children living in poverty after seeing young boys sleeping on roofs and in gutters. Together with his wife, he began an institution that provided education and training to orphans and eventually pioneered the concepts of group homes and foster care in England (concepts considered radical in their day). Dr. Barnardo's Home is still in operation today. Diana, Princess of Wales, was President of Barnardo's from 1984 to 1996.

Marjorie Guyon (Kentucky/New York, 20th-21st Century) large mixed media oil pigment and marble dust on board "fresco" painting depicting a central photomechanical collage of a concrete form surrounded by large abstract geometric sections of color rendered in thick layers of red, yellow, and green paint. Unsigned. Float mounted in a contemporary giltwood frame with fluting. Sight: 48" H x 36" W. Framed: 53" H x 41 1/2" W. Biography: Marjorie Guyon, originally from New York, studied poetry at Hampshire College in Amherst, MA. She moved to Lexington, KY, where she had a sudden realization during a particularly frustrating writing session that her life's passion was for painting, not poetry, and began to build a body of work. In 1980, dealer Merton Simpson of Madison Avenue helped rocket her to success after being taken with the poetic paintings. Guyon describes her collages at the center of each piece as "pages from an ancient book" containing "the most important things that one would want to pass on…the things that they will need to remember." Her success in New York has not influenced her to move from Lexington, however, stating "Here, I don't feel any pressure…That sense of space and distance has enabled me to investigate my own vision." Kurt Larisch (Austria/Mexico, 1913-2009) acrylic on canvas abstract geometric painting comprised of three columnar shapes having shadowed green bands bound by gradient white and gray segments blending into a neutral background. Signed and dated "Kurt Larisch 74" lower right corner. Housed in an unfinished wooden frame. Canvas: 37 3/4" W x 29 9/16" H. Framed: 38 1/2" H x 30 1/2" W. Note: Austrian born artist Kurt Larisch worked as a graphic artist and animator in Europe before moving to Mexico in 1970 and becoming one of that country's most celebrated contemporary artists. His geometric, often surrealist abstract paintings have been described as Kafkaesque, showing the influence of Escher, Mondrian and Magritte.

The Hintermeisters utilized this skill within a series of calendars depicting American history from 1775-1787, and Henry Hintermeister is most known for his American themed and animal paintings. The cotton field scene depicts two African American men seated on a mule-drawn wagon, while two women and a younger man walk behind along a red clay road. Molded giltwood frame with beaded sight edge. Signed "Mary Blair" lower right. Sight: 8" H x 11" W. Framed: 11" H x 14" W. Note: a pencil inscription, "Schullstrom", en verso of backing board, may refer to Walter Schullstrom (1901-1968), who worked as an electrician at Disney during the mid 20th century. Biography: "One of Walt Disney's favorite artists, Mary Blair learned her craft at The Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles in the mid-1930s. She joined The Walt Disney Company in 1940 where she created concept paintings for projects related to Fantasia, Dumbo, and The Lady and the Tramp. She developed a distinct look to her concept art by using vivid colors from gouache and tempera to create swirling, highly imaginative images that influenced many of Disney's feature films of the 1940s and 1950s including Song of the South, Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, and Peter Pan. Blair left Disney in 1953 to concentrate on children's books and raising a family. In 1963 Walt Disney convinced Blair to work on Disney's contribution to the 1964 World's Fair in New York. Her concept art on this project would be her final major designs for Disney. Walt Disney signed animation cel, used in the original 1950 movie Cinderella. The hand painted celluloid illustration depicts Cinderella's mice and bird friends hurrying down the attic steps as they gather needles and thread to sew a ball gown for her. Signed with personal inscription on the lower right mat, "To Denis Sarrat with Best Wishes, Walt Disney." Original Disney label stating this painting on celluloid was actually used in the production of the 1950 movie, en verso of backing. He gained success at a young age, having one-man shows in Europe and painting the murals for the Italian Pavilion at the 1958 World's Fair in Brussels. He is known for his brightly colored, semi-abstract impressionist works of the Mediterranean and contemporary European lifestyle, layered richly with a palette knife. David Guyce LeDoux (Louisiana/Tennessee, 1926 – 2010), "Field / Fences," large oil on canvas abstract painting rendered in bright primary colors with black and white accents. Signed en verso of stretcher. Old label containing title, date 1993 and original price. Narrow whitewashed wooden frame. 54" x 44" Sight, 55 7/8" x 45" Framed. Biography: Louisiana-born artist David LeDoux was known for his abstract expressionist paintings, which he created in four series: the black period (1985-1990); the red period (1990-1995); the violet/purple period (1995-2000); and the blue period (2000-2004). LeDoux was a graduate of Louisiana College and Louisiana State University, and also did doctoral work at Ohio State University. Following his service as a Naval Aviator and World War II veteran, he came to Murfreesboro, Tennessee in 1956 to teach drawing and painting in the Art Department at MTSU. He retired in 1994 after 38 years. A commemorative exhibit of his works was held in 2016.

George Peter (American, 1859-1950) oil on canvas Western landscape painting, depicting the tip of a glacier or icecap melting into a small stream of water and gushing down the side of a mountain as green grass begins to emerge between the rocks. Biography: George Peter came to the United States from Austria in 1886 and settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as a panorama painter. He was one of the workers on the ill-fated Chattanooga diorama at the Columbian Exposition, and also designed scenery for the Pabst Theater. Peter's work was exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1902. He became the Art Director of the Milwaukee Public Museum in 1923 and painted in the Western U.S. including at Yosemite Valley and Zion National Park in the 1930s.

Float framed in a modern burlwood frame on cream mat. Includes extensive print documentation from Western Graphics lithography workshop, who published the print, along with a matted photomechanical reproduction of another Gorman artwork and a general informational sheet concerning the artist. This print is identified in the Western Graphics documentation as the second state and as printed by master printer Russell Hamilton and printer Richard Blanchard. Signed at dated "H. M. Luquiens, 1929" in plate, lower left. Signed and titled in pencil. Plate: 7 3/4" H x 9 3/4" W. Frame: 16 3/8" H x 18 3/4" W. Note: Born in Massachusetts, Luquiens moved to Hawaii in 1915 and secured a position teaching art at the University of Hawaii. He went on to lead the art department at the university and to found the Honolulu Printmakers printmakers association, which is still active today. The female subject is depicted attired in a black dress with lace collar and sleeves, having a jeweled broach, pin, bracelet, earrings, and a gold chain, and holding a lace handkerchief. The male subject is depicted as a bearded gentleman attired in a black coat and tie with a jeweled pin, watch chain, and ring, holding a cigar in one hand and a New York Daily Tribune newspaper in the other. They are both seated in a red velvet chair against a plain dark background. The male portrait is stamped "Goupil & Co…New York" label on verso of canvas, and the female portrait with two illegible stamps en verso of canvas. Both with old labels for the H. Carl Gutherz or Guthers (Tennessee/Missouri/France, 1844-1907) oil on canvas profile portrait painting of a man attired in a black suit with a white collar and purple tie against a dark background. Signed "Carl Gutherz" lower right. Crayon inscription reads "Carl Gutherz Artist Washington D.C. 1905" en verso. Label en verso identifies the sitter as Albert Sidney Johnson. Housed in an ornate giltwood Casetta-style frame with bead course and C-scroll decoration. Sight: 29 1/2" H x 24" W. Framed: 45" H x 39 1/2" W. Biography: Gutherz, who immigrated to the U.S. in 1851, was associated with the American Symbolist movement. He studied at L'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and the Academie Julian. He lived with his family in Memphis, Tennessee, during the Civil War and in 1875 moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where he taught at Washington University and helped establish the St. Louis School and Museum of Fine Arts. After leaving Memphis, Gutherz continued to take portrait commissions from that city, and designed costumes and floats for the annual Memphis Mardi Gras. In 1906, he produced a design for an arts and sciences pavilion which was the basis for the development of Brooks Memorial Art Gallery, now the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art.

Ora Coltman (Ohio, 1858-1940) oil on board coastal landscape painting depicting a setting sun reflected in a body of water, with cloud-streaked sky overhead. Signed "Ora Coltman" lower right. Housed in a period giltwood leaf-molded frame. Sight: 14" H x 11" W. Frame: 17 1/2" H x 14" W. Biography: Noted Ohio artist Ora Coltman was an influential member of the regionalist Cleveland School and helped found the Water Color Society of Cleveland. He studied with Carroll Beckwith at the Art Students League in New York and in Paris under Jean Paul Laurens. Koopman (North Carolina/France, 1869-1914) oil on canvas painting titled "Volendam" depicting a Dutch girl in traditional attire standing on a street knitting with figures, village architecture, and maritime landscape in the background. Signed and dated "Augustus B Koopman '95" lower right. Titled below signature. Fragmented old label affixed to frame en verso. Housed in carved and painted wood frame with gilt liner. 37 3/4" H x 23 1/2" W. Framed: 39 1/4" H x 31" W. Biography: Augustus Koopman was born in Charlotte, North Carolina and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the L'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris under Bouguereau. He ultimately made France his home, although he exhibited widely throughout the U.S. and Europe, becoming best known for his marine and figure paintings. His early work has been compared with modern Dutch marine painters Mesdag and Blommers. In 1912 he was elected an associate of the Societe Nationale des Beaux Arts. He also won a special silver medal for his decoration at the Paris Exposition of 1900, the bronze medals at the Pan-American Exposition at Buffalo (1901) and at the St. Louis Exposition, and a silver medal at the Appalachian Exposition at Knoxville (1911). His portraits and decorations are represented in French and American collections in St. Louis, St. Paul, and Detroit museums; the Philadelphia Art Club; and the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences. Continental school, 19th century, oil on canvas tavern scene in the manner of the seventeenth-century Dutch or Flemish school, especially Adriaen Brouwer and David Teniers the Younger. The painting depicts the darkened interior of a tavern with a central group of card players flanked at right by a couple holding hands and at left by a faintly visible figure exiting through a doorway. The central figure wears a red cap while the man seated across from him is outfitted in a tailcoat and cravat. Inscription on reverse reads "x Coulter A.(?) I." Unsigned. Painted on glass and housed in wooden frames with dark stain and silver fillet. 1st item: Half-length portrait of a woman in a white jacket with fur-lined collar and blue bonnet adorned with blue feathers, before a brown background. Eglomise full-length portrait of Young Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) in military garb for the German market. Napoleon carries in one hand his sword and Imperial crest and in the other an ornate hat with plumage. The figure is identified in German text below the image as "Junge Naplion [sic]." Housed in a modern wooden frame painted black. Sight: 12 3/4" H x 9 3/8" W. Framed: 15 5/16" H x 11 15/16" W. Likely Chinese, early 19th Century. 1st item: Copper-plated oval high relief plaque with figure of Roman sea goddess Salacia by Jean-Baptiste Germain (French, 1841-1910). Salacia kneels before a ship, fishing net, and growth of cat tails. She holds in her right hand three fish including a flounder and in her left a standard with the image of a dolphin. She wears loose drapery, a seashell necklace, and additional cat tails in her hair. Inscribed with artist's name, "J. B. Germain 1868," and publisher, "[Leopold Ou]dry Pre Editeur," lower left, "84" at the lower edge, center (this may be the edition number). Mounted on a plush black textile mount with metal corners painted to match copper plaque. Plaque: 16" H x 12" W. Mount: 24" H x 19" W. Publisher note: Leopold Oudry was a publisher of electroplated cast items including vases and sculpture, such as this relief plaque. Electroplating is a process by which cast items–typically iron or bronze–are coated with copper or another metal. Working under Baron Georges-Eugene Haussmann, the engineer Jean-Charles Alphand, Director of the Corps of Bridges and Roads, commissioned Oudry to plate all cast monuments and objects in the city of Paris. Oudry also participated in the Universal Exhibitions in Paris in 1855 and London in 1862, winning a 2nd class medal at the former. In 1861 Oudry copper plated Jacques Ignace Hittorff's famous Fontaines de la Concorde, which had previously required repainting each year. Four human figures (two of them nude) inhabit another nearby island in the background. Signed lower right. Additionally signed and titled en verso. Includes original receipt from the Galleria D'Arte Portofino. Plain white frame with painted white mat and raised sight edge. Sight: 23" H x 31" W. Frame: 30 1/2" H x 38 1/2" W. Note: Alessandra Puppo is known for her naive and colorful landscapes. She studied art with Rafaello Salimbeni and Adriana Pincherle and has lived throughout Europe. Her paintings are in several museums including the Musee d'Art Naif de I'lle de France, Paris; the Musee International de l'art Naif Chateau Ste Helen, Nice; the Luzzara Municipal Museum, Reggio Emilia, Italy; and the Pinacoteca Comunale, Stia, Arezzo.
