Rare Southwestern Virginia stoneware jar, probably a presentation jar. Decorated with a cobalt blue band around the rim, the number "4" with squiggle lines surrounding the number, a fish symbol flanked by vines in the center of the jar and the name, "Chilhowie" in cobalt script at the base. The name probably represents the name of the town of Chilhowie in Smith County, Virginia. The jar descended from the Lewis family of Rural Retreat, Virginia. Albany slip interior. Condition – a couple of old rim chips and shallow base chips. 14 1/2" height. Late 19th century.
