Painting of Jupiter and Io, painted after the Old Master by Antonio da Correggio, with the mythological scene of Io seduced by Jupiter disguised as a cloud. The subject is taken from Ovid’s Metamorphosis and depicts Jupiter, disguised in a cloud seducing his wife’s priestess Io, while she dreams. Io was the daughter of the first King of Argos. The stretcher is dated Nov 4, 1860. The stretcher has a label on the back for John Lane, "appointee to HSH Prince and Princes of Teck" with a London Knightsbridge address (HSH title, "His Serene Highness"). The dukes and princes of Teck were a branch of the Royal House of Wurttemberg. His Highness Prince Francis, Duke of Teck (Francis Paul Charles Louis Alexander) was born in 1837 and died in 1900. Francis was a member of the British Royal Family, the father of Queen Mary. Francis held the titles of a Prince of Wuttemberg and later Duke of Teck. In 1863, Francis was created Prince of Teck, with the style, His Serene Highness in the Kingdom of Wurttenberg. In 1871, he was created Duke of Teck. He was granted the style His Highness in 1887. Appears to be in the original gilt carved frame. Condition – very good condition for age, minor losses to carving on frame. Painting 23 1/2" x 36". Circa 1860.
