Elephant folio titled "The Works of William Hogarth, from the Original Plates Restored by James Heath", published by J. Nichols and Son for Baldwin, Cradock and Joy, London, 1822. Bound in 3/4 brown morocco over marbled boards, faded gilt gold writing on spine and faint gilt gold on edges of pages. Includes engraved frontispiece of Hogarth's self-portrait "The Painter and his Pug", title page, "A Biographical Essay On, the Genius and Productions of Hogarth, and, Explanations of the Subjects of the Plates" by John Nichols, contents list, and an explanation of the plates. The majority of the book is comprised of 119 leaves of plates after Hogarth, complete as listed on contents page. 26-1/2" H x 20-1/4" W x 3" D. Also included is an article about Hogarth and three lithographs depicting Italian scenes. CONDITION: Front board detached and worn, wear, tears and losses to spine. Interior pages chipped on edges with scattered foxing/browning. Tear lower margin of portrait frontispiece but page still attached to spine.
