John Sevier (Tennessee, 1745-1815) signed letter. John Sevier was Tennessee's first Governor, Congressman and a Revolutionary War veteran. Autographed document ordering Nancy Henderson to appear before the Justices of Washington County, NC in November 1783. Letter addressed to the Sheriff of Washington County. Signed lower right corner. Condition: browning at fold lines, right fold line taped on back of document with separation through part of signature. Circa 1783.
Side 1: "____ Wife – The state of Nancy Henderson Cap. – February 1784 ___ decent 1783 – Cocke Att. Earnest Geo. Mitchell __ Sheriff"
Side 2: "State of North Carolina – To the sheriff of Washington DC – We Command you to take Nancy Henderson if to be found in your Bailwick and her safely keep so that you have her bef-ore some one of our Justices of the Peace Here to Enter into Recognizance to be our Hiers and Successors. With Condition to Appear before the Justices of our County Court of pleas and Quarter sessions to be held on the first Monday in February next. And there to abide by the Judgment of said Court. Herein Fail not & have you there this Writ Witness. John Sevier Clerk of our said Court at office, the first Monday in November anno domini 1783. ___ John Sevier C.C."
