Raoul Maucherat De Longpre (French, 1859-1911), Still Life with pink roses and lilacs, gouache on paper, signed lower right. Gilded, bead molded frame. Sight: 21-1/4" H x 27-1/2" W, frame: 28-1/2" H x 35-1/2" W. Provenance: Property of a Maryville, TN collector, inherited from his mother. Biography: Best known for his floral still lifes, Raoul DeLongpre was born into a family of artists and was painting flowers on fans for a Paris firm by the age of twelve. HIs scientific studies of flowers exhibit a high degree of accuracy. Lilacs (which symbolized youthful innocence and first love) were his favorites. At age 21, he began exhibiting in the Paris Salon. Whether or not he traveled to America is unknown, but several of his paintings made their way into private and museum collections here, likely through the efforts of his brother, fellow floral artist Paul De Longpre. Condition: Overall very good condition with small tear to upper right margin. Minor scratches and some gold color worn on frame.
