19th century Southern oil on canvas portrait of a lady, by oral history Sarah Jane Harvey Overton of Nashville (1817-1890), depicted seated holding a rose, with upswept hair and attired in a black lace trimmed dress. Unsigned. Unframed. 25 1/2" H x 31 3/4" W. Provenance: descended in subject's family; private Nashville collection. CONDITION: Unframed. Overall light craquelure. Some rubbing to perimeter of canvas. Professionally conserved in 1996, by Cumberland Art Conservation, label en verso. Blacklight reveals inpainting to tear/scratch on subject's cheek, scattered areas of bust and shoulders, and scattered spots in background.
