Group of nine (9) Japanese Imari palette plates for the Japanese market, decorated with iron red and gilt birds of paradise and medallions to border and centers with underglaze blue sea creatures or dragons, all enclosed within a slightly raised scalloped rim. Blue and white mark in circle to underside center, with blue bats and bird designs to underside border. 8 1/4" dia. Old note accompanying the plates states they were acquired by the wife of a General, living in Japan after World War II. Provenance: Private Middle Tennessee collection. CONDITION: All with varying levels of wear to gilding; 2 have 1/4" chips to underside of foot ring.
