Clifford Warren Ashley (Massachusetts, 1881-1947) oil on canvas painting depicting a village neighborhood street scene with figures conversing before one of the houses. Stamped "??G.T. Akin & Co., Agent" on stretcher. Signed lower left. Housed in original gilt Whistler style frame. Sight – 25 3/8" H x 29 3/8" W. Framed – 35 1/4" H x 39 1/4" W. American, early 20th century. Provenance: Private East Tennessee collection of family with older member raised in Massachusetts. Biography: Clifford Warren Ashley was born in the whaling port town of New Bedford. He studied in Boston at the Eric Pape School alongside N.C. Wyeth, Sidney Chase and Henry Peck, and under Howard Pyle in Wilmington, Delaware. Ashley was known for his marine paintings and illustrations of New Bedford. CONDITION: Very good condition overall with slight craquelure. Marginally loose in frame. 9" horizontal crease in center of canvas and 1" diagonal scratch center of left edge. No inpainting or alterations detected with black light.
