Portrait of Sarah Whitfield McPhail Nichols, attributed to Washington Bogart Cooper (Tennessee, 1802-1888). The subject was from Williamson County, TN, the sister of CSA General Wilkins Whitfield. She married Dr. Daniel McPhail of Franklin, Tennessee (whose office on 2nd Avenue now serves as a Visitor’s Center). Following Dr. McPhail’s death in the Mexican war, she married James Nichols. Washington Cooper was among Nashville’s most important portrait painters of the mid-19th century, and painted many of the city’s most prominent citizens. This portrait has been documented by the Tennessee Portrait Project and is documented in the upcoming book Portraits of Williamson Countians by Rick Warwick, published by the Williamson County Historical Society (expected September release). Circa 1856. T. Vance Little estate.
