Portrait miniature on ivory of Hugh Kent in original oval frame with braided hair. Excellent condition. 3 1/8" Height. Provenance – Dr. Hugh Kent was the son of Col. Joseph Kent and Margaret McGavock of Wytheville, VA. This miniature, as well as another of his wife, Nancy Bratton, was purportedly painted while the couple was at White Sulfur Springs, VA. The couple lived at the Randall McGavock place at Max Meadows, VA. (Several members of the McGavock family eventually settled and became prominent leaders in Nashville, TN). This portrait miniature descended through Robert Edwin Withers III, a seventh generation descendant of Jacob Kent (father of Joseph Kent) of Virginia. First quarter of the 19th century.
